Welcome to a world, similar and different to one of our own. It has similar names, but is something else entirely. Based off of the His Dark Material Trilogy written by Philip Pullman; this rp will include the “essence of this strange place” and many of the concepts, most from his first book, The Golden Compass.
To get a better sense of daemons, read the book, but for the easier, quicker way, check out the website: The Golden Compass. There you can also "meet your daemon" and take a quiz to see what your daemon would be, as well as get a name. I recommend this for people to get a good sense of all of this. There's a small paragraph as well on daemons.
Our souls are within our bodies, but in this world peoples’ souls are on the outside as daemons (pronounced: demon). They come in the shape of animals. Children’s daemons don’t take on one shape until they’ve hit puberty. Their daemons can take on different forms that in the future they might have the potential to settle into. The daemon’s animal shape depends on the personality of its person.
Daemons are given names, and they have genders as well. It’s very rare for a person to have the same gender as their daemon. The daemons can be anything from a snow leopard to a moth. Daemons are a person’s soul. They are apart of someone. They express what the person expresses and can talk and move to their own accord, yet portray their person’s emotions. When a person is in distress, the daemons get distressed, for the children’s daemons, they may change shape depending on the situation or emotions. If a person is injured, their daemon is in pain, same the other way around. You can telepathically talk to your daemon and sense each other’s feeling, it’s a team thing. A daemon can’t be separated from their human. They always have to stay next to each other, within a certain distance. If a person goes some place, the daemon has to follow; same as if a daemon is determined to go some where, the person has to follow. You work as a team.
Rules and laws:
- The Great Taboo- the worst thing a person can do is touch another person’s daemon. It’s just unheard of, but in this state, a person has complete control over another. A person’s daemon can’t touch another person either. Human to daemon contact is forbidden, an instinct, unless it’s your daemon. Daemons are allowed to attack each other, though it’s considered very rude behavior.
You can either live as a Gyptian (like a gyspy, traveling group), a scholar (in the collages), or an urchin (a servant, peasant, street person)
All are enemies. The Gyptians hate the street and scholar people, and the scholars (collegies) hate the Gyptians and street folk.
This is going to be a little different. You're going to probably be the age of children (from ages 10-15 more or less). If so, for the daemon, put not static, but changes at will.
