This rp is based off of the totally awesome trilogy: The Chanters of Tremaris, by Kate Constable.
This rp takes place in the fantasy world of Tremaris…
About:
Chantment is the magic that is used here. Chantment is chants, or songs (in simple terms) that enables the chanter certain abilities. The chantments, or songs, are the reins for the magic, channeling it. There are eight different powers. Chantment is taken from the word “enchantment”; it’s an assortment of ancient songs that a person sings in order to create the chantment. You can’t just sing the songs though; you need the magical ability for chantment and you need to know the words to the specific song. People with this ability are called Chanters. People, blessed with the magic, can only sing one chantment. Maybe, if they are truly talented two or three different chantments, but never all of them. It’s impossible…or is it?
The eight different Powers of Chantment:
For an unknown reason, chanters are hated, feared and persecuted. The empire has tried to rid themselves of the chanters, and now most people, the general population believe that chanters and magic is nothing but tales and legends, made to scare young silly children. Others say chanters went extinct over 300 years ago during the genocide of the chanters, a mass purge of hundreds of thousands of people. The leaders feared this unknown power, and most people fear what they do not know. They also hate those who might have an advantage. Magic was seen as evil, courting with demons.
Now:
Some of the chanters have gone into hiding, other live among the population, hiding their magic. It’s very hard. There’ people called Lazars, like chanter police. They steal away children who show chanting abilities. No one knows what happens to those who are taken.
Chanters of wind, windworkers are sold as slaves to captains. They are used to create winds for ships; faster travel. Usually one or two per ship. It’s rare though to have a windworker now.
A group, high in the peaks of the mountains live the last standing population of true chanters: the chanters of ice call. Women who reside behind their wall of ice, hidden and protected in their lands. They protect themselves from the cruel outside world, and live secret, almost secret lives alone in the cold mountains. Tales of witches, women of the snow, travel to the rest of Tremaris though, and war is coming. Most of the population is naivete to the magic of chantment, but change is in the air, for getter or worse, and chantment is getting stronger…. There’s a little secret that the chanters hold, a legend of one who can sing all the chantments…is there really a Singer of All Songs?
You are all going to be chanters. You can pair up, or something.

The eight different Powers of Chantment:
- The Power of Beasts- the singer can tame animals, from angry bees to charging horses. You can’t actually talk to animals, but you can send your thoughts to them, calming them and sometimes even requesting something. Animals can’t literally talk back either.
- The Power of Seeming- this creates illusions and hides reality. It’s a scary thing. It works for those who believe the best. It gives them the illusion, unless they know it’s not real and then the chantment won’t affect them and they can see the real thing. It’s one of the more dangerous and luring chantments of the eight.
Example of Seeming: it’s raining, but you don’t want it to rain, so you sing a chantment to make it seem it’s a sunny day. If you were to walk outside, you wouldn’t think you’d get wet, but you in reality you’d be soaked, it’s an illusion of the mind as well. It’s the highest (in pitch) of all the chantments. - The Power of Winds- governs winds, simple. If a chanter is strong enough, he or she can life an object high into the air. The stronger the natural winds, the stronger the chanter must be.
- The Power of Fire- makes heat and light; can put things on fire, ect. Simple like the wind chantments.
- The Power of Ice- this magic is of ice call. You need water for this (duh), but you can do elaborate things. Like make sculptures, walls, ect. You can freeze and unfreeze water. Ice call is the second highest (in pitch) of the chantments. Only women have this ability.
- The Power of Iron- can move any object except fire, water, air or any living creatures. It’s one of a more known, accepted chantments, tending to be more common amongst the population.
- The Power of Becoming- the magic of life, change and healing. You can heal injuries or even old scars. The difference between all the rest of the chantments and Becoming, is this magic comes from the chanter, not the environment around them, so it is greatly weakening to those who heal too much. If the chanter overextends themselves beyond their abilities, their life energy and magic may be extinguished and they can die. This one is more of a dance, than a chantment. It involves movement more movement instead of words and song. It is one of the rarest of chantments in Tremaris
- The Power of Signs, “The Great Power”- this is truly the darkest of all the chantments. It holds life and death in it’s grasp. It is almost a lost art. Only one person knows this in all of Tremaris. This power gives the chanter abilities ranging from freezing the blood (instant death) to paralyzing. It enables the chanter to kill, maim and destroy in various ways which is why it’s so dark, mysterious and terrifying. People feared it, so slowly it vanished in legend; into almost nothing. The rarest of all chantments in Tremaris; most believe there’s only seven powers.
