This roleplay is based from the book, Graceling by Kristin Cashore (extremely good book!). I just finished the book, and felt the immediate need to make this into a roleplay. It would be perfect! Gracelings:In this world, there are people who are born occasionally with an ability called a Grace. Those who are Graced are called Gracelings (duh). These people are both extremely feared and exploited for their talents. The kings use Gracelings, forcing them to serve them (though more through legal action rather than enslavement). In most kingdoms, the if someone becomes Graced, they are required by law to serve the King. If their Grace is proven to help, then they are used to that king's advantage, and will forever be in service to the Crown (weather they like it or not). If not then Gracelings usually live alone, excluded from society. People fear them; they aren’t normal, aren’t meant to be anything more than an appreciation. The more useful, harmless Graces are better in society usually. There are many types of Graces. There are some which are just talents more than anything else, which are more common. Others that are more powerful are rarer. Graces can be anything from a fighting Grace, which gives the person a talent in battle to a Grace in art, where a person us unusually talented in art. It can be anything, and not one Grace touches a person the same way, even if they’re the same Grace. You can’t have two Graces though. Example: Mind reading is a Grace. But for one person, it might be reading a person's most secret thoughts, for another Graceling it might be reading a person's current thoughts, as they're thinking it. So see, it's different for each person! A Grace can appear at any moment. Usually it’s around the younger years that they manifest (from birth to perhaps eight or nine years). It rarely happens in a person’s older years. The thing that distinguishes a Graceling is their eyes. When they become Graced, their eyes changed colors. Their eyes become two different colors. With time a person’s Grace can expand and grow. The Order of Sarce (aka The Order) This is a group of people, both Graced and unGraced who work undercover throughout the kingdoms to protect people. The Order was founded by Kasta Sarce. She is infamously known as The Law, the punisher for the King of Rada. Despite the rumors that circulate about her, Kasta tried to repair what damage has been done by creating The Order with the help of Lorn. The Land and the Rulers: There are five different kingdoms, where this will be set. I made a map (more out of boredom and curiosity) that should help you establish where each kingdom is located... We'll try to stay pretty accurate to it! Morsea – is a kingdom bordering the sea (hint, the “sea” part in the name). They are seafaring people, ruled by a ruthless king, cruel and self absorbed. They're good traders, more than fighters. Oh, but they do fight. Druet – this kingdom is located high in the northern mountains, accessible only in the warmest months of the season. They are a kind people, different from the other kingdoms from their isolation. They are the only kingdom that does not exploit Gracelings, but respect them. They are very different people, and the kingdom is quite wealthy. Ethill – is the kingdom located west, near the vast desert. The king here is cruel; loves war. He's always trying to fight his way towards the sea to get a port. The kingdom is known for the "gypsies" that roam the sands (lots of criminals head here). There is only one main city here, built over an oasis. Rada – also known as the “Middle Kingdom” they are in the center of all five kingdoms. The king there is also not the kindest of people, but he usually doesn't make war either. That would be too dangerous, being surrounded. He rather keep his power through fear, through Kasta. He fights only when he has to. Sunder – this place is ruled by a greedy king, known for the “secret” slave trade that he profits from. He is to the south. He always makes war (slaves are created from war). Starting Plot:There's a war between Ethill and Sunder (like there always is... they love to fight). Druet is isolated, and silent, it's people developed from rumors. Fear is in the air, as well a suspicion; the best spark for chaos. Tensions are high, and this war is larger than previous ones, bringing murder and terror into other kingdoms. Even Druet, the solitary kingdom is disturbed by the the southern war. Stuck even more in a hazardous place are the Gracelings. Desire to have them at court in service and as protection is even higher, especially if the Grace is of value.... Those who have a Grace that is...useful are at a greater risk than they know. Danger lurks at almost every corner, but something even darker is here. Especially talented Gracelings have been disappearing. Some have even been found, murdered. Is there a Graceling killer on the lose, or is it a Graceling war on the way too? Her only friend is the apprentice to the Weapons Master, Lorn, who helped her control her Grace and hone it. She needed to find out if he could be of help. She slowed down, not wanting to attract attention, fatal or otherwise. They might already know exactly who she was going to be like, but until she was certain, she needed to keep others from seeing her. Shona pulled her hood up, to cover her eyes. They were the only thing she couldn't make people see as different.

Name: Darva Age: 12 Gender: Male Grace: Mind Reading, And strangely can defect a grace when he focuses. But exerts a lot of his energy doing so Kingdom: Sunder Appearance: - Eye Colors: White, and Blue. He is blind in one eye, half blind in his other eye. - Original Eye Color: White - Hair: Bald, he doesn't grow hair. - Skin: Pale white - Other: He is skinny and usually sick. But with a touch of his frozen hand he can pretty much read someone's mind. From a distance he can hear their whispering minds. Personality: Shy, and part of the slaves of the king. History: About the age of ten he felt blessed. He suddenly woke up seeing light. His world once crowded in darkness as he walked the streets as a guild rat finally filled with light. He became stronger and better. Though it was odd when people would speak without their lips moving. How when he touched someone he saw their true being within. Usually in the form of an animal. He was frightened of what he saw. He hid his eyes most of the time, but soon enough word got around. His guild was raided by guards, only he was seized and took into the king's castle. He knew it was either to be put to death, or to become an eternal slave. Other: He is usually kept in his bed by the nurses until the king needs him. He sleeps in the dungeons with barely any food and barely anything to eat. He has no one to talk to, his life is pretty much to serve the king when the king needs to find out what is truely happening in the kingdom. He is the king's secret. Usually just acting like a servent but he is to brush against everyone. Most do not like being touched by a servant, he has the scars to prove that. But when he detects a mole or spy he is rewarded by getting food. And if he is truely lucky by catching an assassin. He gets to go outside.
Name: Alu Karvar Age: 16 Gender: Male Grace: Talents in guile. (Agility and stealth) Kingdom: Rada Appearance: He has a number of disguises. But his favorite is just being himself for once. He usually has his hair short. Clean and cut beard, leaving just enough to be raggedy. But he cuts his beard a bit unevenly to blend in with the lower class he walks around with. - Eye Colors: Green And Hazel - Original Eye Color: Blue - Hair: Short and Trimmed, but ragged - Skin: Tan, but he usually dyes it to change his disguises - Other: He has a perticular tatoo on both of his ears, hidden behind them are two small serpents. Each perfectly matches the other with such professionalism it seems impossible. (Cause it is ) Personality: Depends on his disguise. History: When he was about 8 he found out how great he was at sneaking around. His parents could never hear him running through the house or jumping. They never really saw his acrobatical stunts he did during the night. No one really did. But after he snuck up on his mom and dad too many times, it seemed inhuman. They reported him. The guards barged into his room and he escaped with barely a hairsbreath from a sword slashing his throat. Since then he has lived in the gutters of life. He survived by stealing, begging, and when it came down to those who were about to turn him in. Killing. He has apprenticized in several smitheries. Learning the ways of the blade, and the ways of metal working. What metals mixed best to strengthen, and which would cause irritation making one metal snap like a twig, or make one have so much friction it would burn. He learned much. He stole some of the grandmaster's swords and is now his prized possessions. But after his theft of a Grandmaster who was graced, One who was older then most men, That grandmaster used some strange force to both hold him and control him making him work for the king of Morsea. The blades he holds actually are his lifeline. Without them he becomes sick and irritable. Other: He has two swords. Myr and Gv'r. Myr is a longer blade that is used for sword play. It also sheathes upon it Gv'r which can be pulled off and used to kill someone when the swords are locked in spar.
Name: Harve'a'rok Dar (Harve for short) Age: 63 Gender: Male Grace: Skilled with magic and with swordsmaking Kingdom: Morsea Appearance: Old but not fragile, he usually walks with a customized cane (hint staff ) - Eye Colors: Blue and dark blue, they are very close to the same so he appears not to be graced. - Original Eye Color: Brown - Hair: Salt and Pepper, short and trimmed perfectly. - Skin: Taunt still, with signs of wear and muscles of an steelsmith - Other: He has a long scar on his cheek. From a fight with a theif of an apprentice. But he took care of that helping him work for the king. Personality: Gentle and kind loving. But he can still fight. He usually sings and dances fluently while he casts spells and chants. History: When he was a boy he worked for his father. He was a simple ironsmith. Not much profession but when he became graced he was perfectly adapted to the flexing of the metal. When he made a blade, it would not break or wear for twice the normal time. But his father used him to his advantage. Making him use his talent for profits. The blades he made wear down faster, but work twice as good. They break but are still very strong for six months. They made a lot of money until he finally took it all and left. That used to be in Rada. He moved when he was only 9 years old. A year after his grace appeared. Since then he had opened his own shop. No one really went to him until he hired a skilled Smith to work with him. Once people saw the older man in the shop they went to him. Age ment he had experience. But he always messed up. Only when he turned around 22 did he fire the man and create his own set of weapons. The guards loved them. Strong enough to slice through thick metal, but easy and lightweight to move quickly and nimbly. The swords he made could cut down a tree in one fel swoop. Since then he made a thousand different blades. Experimenting with his powers until he realised when he sang and hummed that the swords became enchanted. They weighed a lot less even though they were the same. They could break another one of his non enchanted swords and some would allow their blade to gain heat and become hotter then an iron so they can wound better. That is when he closed down his middle-town shop and moved to the castle. He set up there and began on grandsmith blades. Ones of different colors, some that look thin as paper but three times stronger then they should. These were made for the elites at the castle and even a special dagger the king wanted. It would never wear down, never break. He made a fortune but he much rather his work with the double blade he made. He made it for an assassin knowing one would come around for it. Myr and Gv'r. That is when he knew his apprentice was an assassin. He had put the spell on him to restain him to the king. It helped. And everyday he saw the kid, but to the kid, the only thing he saw was another strange man. A younger one who worked with swords. Not the old man who was graced. But he did not only work with swords, he made armor, chainmail, breastplates, saddles, animal armor. Everything he wanted to. But his greatest work was Alvira, his staff. It had on its scepter, a single emerald so flawlessly cut with his blade it was worth more then the king's life. But he usually hides that with a simple hand on it. It is a single peice of metal, polished to perfection and made to resemble a serpent. Its body wrapped around the staff in an elegantway that was so perfectly made. The blade itself was never cut, it was a single peice of metal. While he made it he sang and hummed his tunes of chanting. It took a three days to make, he had his other apprentice help him eat and drink while he did so. Whenever he stopped the staff became weaker. So he never did until it was finished. He never leaves it, he protects it with his life. And now he will die with it. Other: He used to have a wife, but she died a long time ago. She became graced later in her teens and because she was useless she was killed.

Kasta watched as she threw another stone across the water. It skipped almost twenty times before disappearing into the depths. She picked up another stone. "Lady Sarce?" Kasta threw the stone. "My Lady?" "What?" Kasta asked, without turning around. She didn't feel like talking to anyone, not even Lorn. "And you don't need to call me 'Lady', you know. We're not at Court; formalities aside..." she said, closing her eyes for a second. She hated when Lorn used the Court titles. “I’ve been looking all over for you.” “You know I love to come to the lake…” Kasta said. Lorn laughed. “And that’s why I’ve found you. Come on; let’s go back to the castle. You’ll catch your death sitting here.” Kasta snorted. “Catch my death…” she laughed, staring at her reflection. Her penetrating violet-azure eyes looked back. “Your uncle has called for you.” "You mean the king," Kasta spat. "That bastard..." She only dared to talk that way about him with Lorn. To speak that way was almost treason. Not that it mattered much. She was above the law. No she was the Law; the punisher. She shuddered to think of what he had in mind for her now. "Kasta… one day someone will hear you,” Lorn said. She snorted. “Good,” she said. Lorn sighed. “It’s getting dark. And I’m sorry to say that I’m not Graced, unlike somebody, so I can’t see in the dark, thank you. So I’d like to be back at the castle before I can’t see my hand in front of my face…" Kasta smile and stoof. "Fine."
Seaten could see everything. Seeing through the eyes of his falcon, he continued his way to Rada. It was one place to escape the war… He’d find shelter and food in one of the towns… It’d be another day’s walk. He called Ial to his arm. She landed gracefully and watched him with intelligent eyes. He skimmed the eyes of other animals, getting his bearings. He was blind; but he could see through the eyes of animals. He had Ial to help, as his main set of eyes, but any animal within a few yards he could see what they saw. The sun was setting. He’d have to make camp here tonight and reach the city tomorrow.
A MONTH AGO... The arrow hit the sapling with a snap, splitting it down the middle. Levia walked up it, yanking it from the broken and splintered wood. It was always good to work a few arrows before using them for good. She looked at the sharpened point. This arrow was her favorite. There was just something about its sleek, black tip that put shivers down her spine. She paused, as she heard a snap of a twig. She turned around, drawing her bow instinctively. A man stood there in black robes with a hood concealing most of his features. "Stay back!" she warned, as the stranger kept approaching. "I have a good shot," she said, glaring. That was her Grace, to never miss her target. No matter how bad she aimed. If she wanted him dead, he would be. "You don't want to shoot me, Levia..." the man said. Levia frowned. No, she didn't. That would be mean of her. How did he know her name? She felt her thoughts swirl in a confused fashion."Come with me, Levia, we have much to discuss. I'll be your new master now..." he said with a confident, strong voice. Levia could only nod, as she walked blank-faced into the forest with him. (dun dun dun... keep an eye out. you may meet this mysterious stranger of mine. just a hint. he's going to get this plot going! hehe)

(repost old post :3 I had some ideas for my char Elliot and your char Kasta, kyana. )
Dedelaen stopped, looking at the two sides of the road, not sure which she should take. The one on her left leaded back to Rada, where she had grown up, and on her right was the way to Morsea, one she decided to take a few months ago. Only now, she was thinking again, clearly. Morsea wasn't really the place to be! She stared up to the sky, pulling her long dress right and binding her brown hair together again, again. She sighed on her decision, she had nothing to do in her home land, nether had she something to search for in the other kingdoms. She sat down, laying her bag besides her. Would anyone notice her if she just died there, on that little space besides the road to Rada, would anyone see her.
Elliot walked into the alley, his face hidded behind a shadow. He waited, his ‘boss’ would find him here, come with a new mission for him to accept. He looked around, it was silent, it was day, but here it was darkness. Far away from the castle he lived, together with a lady, Silvia, who cared for him. He had his arms crossed, wearing a long coat, he hardly had any other clothes, he could effort them, but he mostly ripped them appart as he changed forms. “Junior!” Elliot turned to his side, seeing an old fat man standing up from the ground. “I didn’t see you there.” He spoke, his shirt was overloaded with filt from the street. Elliot found it strange that he could be so fat, since he wasn’t a rich man, and he didn’t have enough money to give his family the food they needed. “I just arrived.” “Well, then. Lets get to business.” The fat man approached, his back cruple under his weigth. "Yes."

(ok! ^_^)
"Ah! Kasta! Good!" King Rada said. He was a large man, powerful and built. He had her mother's eyes and hair, except for the calculating coldness within their depths. "Yes, my Lord?" Kasta said, bowing low. She dreaded what came next. "There was an UnderLord in the Ters Province. He never paid his dues... I'm sending you there tomorrow to help him remember that he owes his lord," Rada said. Kasta bowed again and turned to go. She would just tell him. There needed to be no bloodshed! Just as she turned, Rada called her back. "Oh, and Kasta? I forgot one more thing. Kill his eldest daughter in front of his family. I want a few fingers to prove the act." Kasta swallowed, trying not the cry. That was the part she hated. Rada liked bloody shows. Kasta paused before bowing again and hurrying out of the room.
(got a little idea)
Dedelaen looked up as she saw another girl approaching her. She had a bow strung across her back. She had bright red hair and a dress to match. Her dress had a slit up the sides to the hips with pants beneath. She wore the outfit of the Guard with bracers and a tough leather breast plate. "Hello," the girl said. "Oh, hello..." Dedelaen responded. They looked about the same age. "What are you doing, just sitting there?" the girl asked, smiling. She had a hood on, concealing her face. But as Dedelaen was close enough she could make out the eyes. This girl was a Graceling!

Elliot followed the fat man, who he saw as his father sometimes, while watching behind him. Walking like a human made him feel naked, he nearly after changed his form, but he had to, in order not to draw attention. The fat man, his name was Sir Edon, he once was a lord of a piece of land, but that had changed years and years ago. Now he was Elliot's master, because if he didn't listen to him, he risked the change to get exposed. Edon always wanted to have his own way, he only like money, lots of it. Elliot's secret was his way to the big money, but he couldn't let him do the most dangerous missions, he would never want the boy to die. Edon's room was smaller, it had only one window, which was closed, a bed, and a desk. He waited for Elliot to turn his face to him, before he opened a small box and revealed some letters. "That's a lot?" "No, you usually get more." Edon grinned. "But, here's one that will grant us a lot of money." With us, he always meant himself. "Tell!" Elliot said, reminding the fat man that he couldn't read. Edon looked disturbed. "The King." He said, knowing what Elliot's reaction would be. "Okay, second is..." He continued, after a mad look from his worksman. "a man under King Rada's protection. The apprentice of the Weapons Master, Lorn. It's the second best paid job." Elliot nodded. "I'll do that, where he lives?" "If I'm right, my friend, he lives in the castle." Edon pointed Elliot to the door, he wanted his employee to start right away.
"Just... sitting." Dedelaen said, more whispering. She stood, walking up to the girl, holding out her hand. She was a Graceling, just like her. "I'm Dedelaen." She smiled widely, but when she found out what she did she stopped.

(wait, I don't think I got the mission that was given to Elliot... it wasn't clear... ) The girl smiled, taking Dedelean's hand. "Levia..." she said. "There's no need to be so..." she said, with a warm smile. "Do you live in this town?" Levia asked. Dedelean felt herself immediately warming to Levia, this strange Graceling girl that she just only met. Though there was something off. A look in her eyes which if one were to scrutinize enough showed a distantness. It really no longer bothered Kasta that servants and other people avoided her eyes, always looking away, even when addressing her. Kasta walked out to the stables, and lead her horse from the stall. Even the stall boy averted his eyes as he handed her the tack. "Here's yer stuff my Lady..." he mumbled and then hurried away, as if being too long besides her might give him the plague. Kasta enjoyed the freedom that came with galloping through the kingdom. It was thrilling and exciting at the same time. Her black stallion and the Court colors she wore were a symbol to all of who she was and what she stood for. Lorn trotted up besides her, ready to go. Kasta got on. They looked at each other then galloped out of the castle walls, the guards trailing behind them.

(sorry, I was a little vague.)
Elliot thought his mission to be easy, every mission was easy, at least the first few steps. He had to find his prey, Lorn, and study his daily routine, if he had any. Then note the moment it was save enough for him to kill, if he succeeded, then came the harder part, getting away without being seen. It wasn't easy, but he always came home save, not all in one part, or without a few scratches, but save. He shifted into a dog, now he jumped into character, so close to the castle. There was his chance to get in, shapeshifting. He wasn't Elliot anymore, he was "it", a dog. It moved forward, scanning the area, in hope to find out who its prey was. It didn't know Lorn, it didn't know how he looked, or where he might be. It was alone, and without help. Until two man, a servant and a higher lord, spoiled a long search for him. "Where's Lorn?" "Lorn, he is accompanying lady Kasta to the Ters Providence." It grinned when the hints came through, now the job was even easier. Good that Elliot had studied maps of Rada before, so It didn't have any trouble choosing its way to Ters, where it would find Lorn, and the Lady Kasta. Finding a Lady within a piece of land was not even a job, it was like listening to birds sing. It sprinted off, on its way to its prey, and if it was lucky, it would caught up with them within half a day. Then, lure Lorn along, and kill.
Dedelean blushed. "No, I'm from... some other town nearby, with an idiot name. You?" She still stood besides the road, undecided. She didn't want to say that she came from Rada, although she really grew up in Morsea, but that was an other story.

"Race you to the ravine!" Kasta shouted. This was the only thing she enjoyed when on one of her "enforcements". The horseback riding. She'd broken her horse and they'd grown together. She never felt so free! "You're on!" Lorn shouted over the whistling of the wind. He spurred his horse. Kasta laughed, kicking her horse past Lorn. It was only when she saw the tell tale signs of Ters, that her heart sunk. All the while her mind dreaded it, she felt her body liven. She was born to kill and torture. It was her Grace.
"Oh..." Levia frowned, concentrating. "I...I live abroad," she said, smiling finally. "Why don't you come meet my Master? He'd be so happy to meet you...." Levia said, perking up. It seemed almost off to Dedelean. "Please?" Levia urged, when she saw Dedelean hesitate.

Dedelean wanted to shake her head, to say she had something else to do, but she didn't, and she wasn't much of a liar. "Who's your master?" She asked, instead of saying yes. She didn't trust it, the way it was proposed. There was something strange, maybe it was the way she talked, or how she felt herself about this 'master' of hers. Masters were mostly cruel people, in her past at least.
Elliot shifted back, close to his target, he hid behind a tree and sat down of exhaustion. Ters was close by, a few meters walk outside of the shade of the few trees and into the warmer sun. He needed a disguise, walking around naked, as he was, would draw a lot of attention. A few steps away he heard a man shouting at its sheep. Elliot grinned, shifting into a mountain lion, family of the cat. It, again, was boss and master, running up to the older shouting man, his new prey. He needed clothes and a weapon. It jumped on the man's back, making him drop to the ground, before it began to tear away his skin around the neck. For it was the fastest way to kill without spilling blood on the needed clothes. At the same time its hunger was gone, stilled by the taste of fresh meat. He shifted again, back into human form and dressed up in the clothes. They were a bit to big for him, but he had nothing else, so just that didn't matter.

(getting your characters mixed up? >.< it's ok. I still do it...) (oh and do you mind giving Dedelean a nickname? lol.)
Levia smiled broadly, her Graceling eyes flashing underneath her concealed face. "Oh, he's a wonderful man... Very generous and kind..." she said, almost wistfully. "Please come..." she said, grabbing Dedelean's hand. Dedelean flinched back, but Levia's grip was firm... The other girl pulled her to her feet. "Come, I'll show you!" she said, dragging Dedelean. Dedelean had no choice but to follow...
Kasta slowed, giving her horse a break. Lorn came up besides her. "So?" he asked. "Ready?" Kasta didn't respond. "Give me the whole plan. Why does this poor man deserve such a punishment?" Kasta asked, already knowing it was for some stupid reason. "Well this man own some farms that serfs work on. He was supposed to pay his taxes two months ago, but never did. The king's orders are..." "I know what they are..." Kasta said. She bent forward, so the guards couldn't overhear. "When does the crow sing?" she asked. It was code for the Order. Her Order. The Order of Sarce. "It sings when the sky dies," Lorn responded. That was code for as soon as this is over...

(haha, phail. sure, go ahead.)
Elliot went on, he picked up the trail of his prey, a group of riders. Lorn was certainly among them, and he would have to kill everyone in order to find out who it is. He was slower on foot now, but close enough to catch up. Within a few minutes he saw the horse ride slowly out in front, a few guards, a normal dressed man, and a woman. He grinned, perfect.
